Quantifying the Impact of RDE Testing for the State of Arizona

Mentor: Jeffery Wishart
None of the above: Fall 2018

This research is helping to facilitate a realistic pathway to meet a unique local need by first understanding testing methodologies that are currently being employed in the European Union and the private sector. By first estimating how diesel vehicles are in use on Arizona roads and from there extrapolating impact using a model vehicle similar to those used in the EU’s PEMS compliant Vehicles.

An Arizona-Specific, Real-World Driving Emissions Testing Methodology

Mentor: Jeffery Wishart
FURI: Spring 2018

The research project focuses on developing an Arizona-specific RDE test to corroborate and supplement the laboratory testing used to certify vehicles for sale and operation. The researcher is currently developing a clearer understanding of the currently employed testing methods used in the EU for NOx and PM measurements in RDE testing and is providing an in-depth summary. Once a complete understanding of the well-documented and long-developed EU RDE testing methodology is complete, the Arizona-specific test methodology can be developed. The newly developed methodology will require refinement and validation.
