Air Pollution Control Using Cool Coat Surface Technology

This project explores how specific hydrocarbons interact and chemically react over surfaces. The chemistries of common gaseous hydrocarbons are investigated over common infrastructure materials coated with a temperature-regulating (cool coating) material. Chemical adsorption and reaction are characterized, and a mathematical relationship between air pollutant removal over the coated surfaces as a function of temperature and flow rate is deduced. This is one of the few studies linking air pollutant removal chemistry, temperature, and infrastructure material surfaces. The results from this project will have direct applications to the sustainable design and environmental impact of municipal and commercial-related infrastructure projects.
