Engineering Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 for the Coproduction of Ethylene and D-lactic Acid

Cyanobacteria have previously been engineered to produce ethylene (a monomer used for polyethylene synthesis) and D-lactate (a precursor to PLA, the biodegradable plastic alternative) independently of one another. That said, utilizing microbial cell factories for the production of a single chemical is making suboptimal utilization of resources. If instead one strain were engineered to coproduce ethylene and D-lactate at significant levels, it would contribute toward improving the economics of the biorefinery. This proof of concept could be further expanded to a wide variety of chemicals.
