Using Structural Density Gradients to Optimize the Strength-to-Weight Ratios of 3D Printed Parts

In order to optimize the strength and weight of an object undergoing additive manufacturing, it is necessary to give the object an appropriate internal inlay structure; however, traditional inlays distribute material inefficiently, in order to make the inlay fit any part. Researching an inlay that can create an adapted density gradient within a part allows for material to be used more efficiently. In order to do this, various configurations of a semi-triangular and semi-hexagonal inlay have been simulated, tested, and compared to control inlays. Successfully optimizing the inlay will provide major advantages to a part’s strength to weight ratio.
