Optimum Methods of Nanoscale Material Characterization for Analyzing Interphase Properties of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials
This experiment studied the performance of the most common methods of nanoscale material characterization on polymer matrix composites (PMC). This lightweight and high-strength material is used in critical structures such as aircraft and energy generation due to its unique properties. To fully understand the mechanical properties of a PMC, the interphase region between the fiber and polymer matrix must be characterized as this region governs stress transfer and thus its bulk characteristics. With a direct comparison of mechanical property and topographical data, an optimal method of testing will be determined for the understanding the PMC interphase mechanical properties.
