Movement and Quantification of E. coli in a Managed Aquifer Recharge Site

This study quantifies Escherichia coli in water sources in a managed aquifer recharge site and characterizes E. coli movement through clay loam. E. coli is a fecal indicator bacteria found in wastewater. Some strains pose a risk of gastrointestinal illness. The site of focus is the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, Arizona. E. coli transport from the ponds to a nearby recreationally used water source called Water Ranch Lake is studied to inform models of microbial transport and potential risk. E. coli concentrations are quantified for the water bodies, and soil column experiments are used to characterize the movement of E. coli.
