Acetone: A Promising Biomarker for Human Fat Metabolism

This research study focuses on the development of a wearable sensor for acetone quantification in skin headspace through measuring color change in a hydroxylamine coated substrate. The development of such a sensor would allow passive tracking of a person’s fat metabolism rate and could alert diabetic individuals of the onset of diabetic ketoacidosis. Thus far, a mobile application for measuring acetone sensor color changes has been developed, as well as the invention of a device capable of providing consistent lighting to photograph colorimetric sensors. Future work will focus on the quantification of acetone vapor in skin headspace using GCMS.
